Residents at Ashley House enjoyed a cheerful St George’s Day celebration, taking part in themed activities that combined learning, conversation and baking.
The day began with a quiz created using Our Echo, with residents gathering together to listen to fun facts and answer questions about St George’s life and death. Photographs show the quiz displayed on screen, alongside residents seated together and fully engaged in the activity. There were plenty of interesting points raised during the session, with resident Barb Dawe summing up one famous part of the story with a smile: “He killed a dragon!” Team member Angie Mileham-William also shared a historical fact, noting: “Shakespeare died on this day in 1616.”
After the quiz, some residents enjoyed making cakes to continue the celebrations. Using fondant icing, they carefully created the red cross of St George’s flag to decorate the cupcakes. Images show Wendy cutting red icing into strips and placing the crosses on top, while Maggie and Barb rolled out white icing and cut neat circles for the base. Another lovely photo shows Barb and Maggie seated together decorating their cakes, with carer Archie helping to cut out icing shapes. The finished cupcakes, displayed on a cake stand with mini England flags, looked fantastic.
As well as being enjoyable, the activities supported social interaction, memory and dexterity, giving residents the chance to spend time together, share ideas and create something special to mark the occasion.
