“Activities like gardening and creating wildlife spaces give residents a real sense of purpose. They’re not just spending time outdoors, they’re contributing to something meaningful, which has a lasting positive effect on wellbeing.”
At Michaelstowe Care Home, the Green Agenda is coming to life through an ambitious and evolving garden project that brings together sustainability, creativity, and community.
Residents have been actively involved in developing a “wildlife village” a dedicated space designed to support birds, insects, and other local species. From carefully constructed bird boxes to an impressive bug hotel, each element has been created with both purpose and pride.
Alongside this, residents have been planting seeds and nurturing new growth, with the aim of producing ingredients that can be used in the home’s kitchen. This approach not only supports sustainability but also creates a meaningful connection between the garden and daily life, reinforcing the journey from planting to plate.
The project encourages residents to spend time outdoors, engage in hands-on activity, and take ownership of something that continues to grow and develop. It also supports biodiversity and reflects a wider commitment to environmentally responsible care.
While still a work in progress, Michaelstowe’s wildlife village is already making a lasting impact, demonstrating how the Green Agenda can be woven into everyday life, creating spaces that benefit both residents and the natural world alike.
