1000 Miles

South West Care Homes Team Smashes 1000-Mile Target – Raising Over £4,000 for Charity

What started as a bold challenge to walk 1,000 miles in May quickly became something much bigger. Staff, residents, and friends from across South West Care Homes laced up their trainers and hit the pavements, parks, and gardens – ultimately clocking up a remarkable 1,750 miles between them.

In the process, they raised over £4,000, which has now been donated in equal parts to two charities close to the hearts of the homes: The Alzheimer’s Society and The Cinnamon Trust, each receiving £2,000.

“It’s been an amazing event,” …. “Not only have we raised money for two wonderful causes, but we’ve also seen residents and staff bonding in ways that were truly heart-warming.”

One of the highlights of the campaign was a group walk held at Haldon Forest in Devon, where residents and teams from different homes came together, met face-to-face, and enjoyed a scenic afternoon walking through the trees – sharing stories, laughter, and a few well-earned tea breaks.

And for those residents unable to join the walks in person, the spirit of the challenge wasn’t lost: some took part by pedalling in their chairs while watching the Tour de France, turning lounge spaces into cycling stages filled with cheer and determination.

The challenge has proved not just a fundraising success, but a wellbeing boost across the board. Staff have reported increased energy, camaraderie, and a renewed focus on active living – all with residents at the heart of the effort.

With smiles on faces and miles in the bank, the challenge has delivered not only vital funds but a boost in wellbeing, team morale, and resident engagement – with many already asking what the next challenge will be.
